You’re A Member Of The LRTA, But Are You A Member Of The STPRSEA?

Many St. Tammany Parish School Board retirees are members of the Louisiana Retired Teachers’
Association (LRTA) and assume the STPRSEA and the LRTA are one and the same. Both organizations are very worthwhile and have similar goals, but they are not the same association. The LRTA provides an important function, primarily working for retirees at the state and sometimes federal
levels.

Our local group of STPRSEA members meet in the parish regularly, throughout the year, in both
informational and social settings to give retirees the opportunity to stay in touch with one another
and to remain current on local retirement and education issues.

So, retirees need to join both associations and take advantage of the opportunities that each
group offers.
Lifetime Membership Is A Bargain

All new members and current yearly dues-paying members of the STPRSEA are urged to join the
association as a lifetime member. For only $45, retirees can pay one-time-only membership dues that
provide several benefits. Not only are members relieved of having to keep track of paying dues every
year, but they also are entitled to some nice offers:

1. voting membership in the STPRSEA;
2. a special I.D. card that permits free admission to home St. Tammany Parish School Board athletic
events; and
3. a STAR card (St. Tammany Advantage Rewards) that offers discounts at local participating
businesses and restaurants.

The STPRSEA meets regularly throughout the year to provide opportunities for retirees from the school system to hear about the latest local and state retirement issues and to enjoy fun and fellowship with new and former friends.

For a one-time-only fee of $45, the STPRSEA offers a life-time membership that entitles members who have retired from St. Tammany Parish to vote on association matters, furnishes an identification card that allows members free admission to all home games at school system athletic events and provides a St. Tammany Advantage Rewards (STAR) card for discounts at participating local businesses and restaurants.

The second Thursday of September, November, December, March and May are reserved for STPRSEA meetings, including an annual Christmas party and spring picnic in May. This year’s calendar of meetings is: November 1, 2012, at 10 a.m.; December 13, 2012 at 11 a.m. Christmas Party; March 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. Election of Officers; and May 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. Spring Luncheon.

For more information, call Marian Arrowsmith at 985-626-5880. Retirees may join the STPRSEA at any regularly scheduled meeting or may send a check for $45 payable to STPRSEA in care of STPRSEA at Post Office Box 2992; Covington, Louisiana 70434.
Important Legislative Changes to Retirement System Being Considered

The STPRSEA wants to keep you informed about some very important proposals being considered that can have a detrimental impact on our retirement. Below is a link to information about retirement benefit changes that some state legislators are considering during the legislative session this year. We do not want legislators or the Governor to select our board members or to change or retirement plan.

We believe you will agree that actively opposing such changes to our retirement system is imperative. As retirees who stand to be negatively impacted, we need to let legislators know that we want them to maintain our defined benefit plan and we want to continue being able to elect our own retirement board members to serve on the TRSL Board.

Please enlist your family and friends to help with this as well. We need to make our wishes and voices heard. Thank you!
